The DfE has confirmed that the Primary PE and Sport Premium will continue at the doubled rate of £320 million for 2019-2020.
For the second year running the Department for Education has maintained the amount schools are funded specifically for PE and sport. It includes local authority schools, academies, free schools, special schools, pupil referral units as well as general hospitals.
Schools receive PE and sport premium funding based on the number of pupils in years 1 to 6. In cases where schools don’t follow year groups (for example, in some special schools), pupils aged 5 to 10 attract the funding. Schools with 16 or fewer eligible pupils receive £1,000 per pupil. Schools with 17 or more eligible pupils receive £16,000 and an additional payment of £10 per pupil.
This means schools can use the premium to develop or add to the PE, physical activity and sport activities that they already offer. As well as building capacity and capability within the school to ensure that improvements made now will benefit pupils joining in future years.
