Joe Evans, Apprentice Coach at Little Sports Coaching, tells us why he wanted a career in Sports Coaching and why others should consider it too.
What inspired you to go into coaching?
“I’ve always really enjoyed football and I come from footballing family. Both of my parents were season ticket holders for Manchester City and even at a young age I was interested in football. My parents took me to watch Man City play when I was about 6 – we saw them play in the Europe League against FC Salzburg. After that I played football for my school at St Paul’s in Manchester.”
Things are different now as Joe works in one of this rapidly growing company’s three cities Manchester, Leeds and Liverpool.
“Because I really enjoyed football so much it just seems like a naturally good idea to combine this with career as a sports coach.”
What attracted you to LSC?
“There is a mixture of different duties that a coach has to do, and the equipment we use is really important. On a typical day I come into the office and one of my tasks is to check equipment and there are other admin tasks to complete too. It’s a really varied job but my favourite part of the job is the coaching.”
“The rest of the day I do a lunchtime session that supports the teaching staff at St Mary’s Primary School and I also coach at after school sessions.”
After school clubs are just one of the company’s sports offerings it offers for schools, but Joe also works with parents and toddlers at the weekend too.
“I really enjoy the variation, at the weekend I coach Mini Soccer sessions with 5-11 year olds, and Tots FC sessions which is a parent and toddler activity.”
Joe loves the practical aspect of his job, “Doing an apprenticeship is very hands-on and that’s the best way I learn.”
What advice would you give about doing an apprenticeship?
“I originally wanted to do a combination of football and coaching and I’ve already managed to achieve my BTEC qualification, now I’m gaining my work experience as a coach.”
“I like a lot of things about the apprenticeship -it always keeps you on your toes and there’s never a boring day. It’s great to be out coaching.“
“If anyone was thinking about applying for any type of coaching apprenticeship I would say do it. 100% I’d say go into coaching its brilliant.”
“In a couple of words, I would describe my experience as “Just great!”
