HAF Programme Extended for 3 More Years: A Lifeline for Families
The Department for Education has announced a significant extension of the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme.
The government are committing £600 million to continue providing free meals and enriching activities for children in low-income families until 2029.
This decision reflects the programme’s crucial role in tackling holiday hunger and supporting families. In 2023 alone, over 600,000 children participated in HAF clubs across England.
At LSC, we’re proud to be part of this mission. Since 2021, we’ve delivered HAF holiday clubs all year round, supporting families across Greater Manchester, Staffordshire, Birmingham, Merseyside and beyond.
What is the HAF Programme?
Launched nationally in 2018, the HAF programme provides free holiday clubs during Christmas, Easter and summer breaks.
Children from Reception to Year 11 are offered nutritious meals each day, an opportunity to participate in a range of activities (sports, arts & crafts and more), and a chance to build friendships and confidence.
The programme was designed to close the ‘Holiday Experience Gap’. Research shows that children from low-income households are typically:
- Less access to organised out-of-school activities
- Increased risk of ‘unhealthy’ holidays in terms of nutrition and physical activity
- Greater likelihood of social isolation
Why This Matters For Families
The government’s £600 million pledge is not just funding, it’s an investment in happier, healthier children.
For families, HAF provides a vital safety net by:
- Combat holiday hunger– children receiving a nutritious meal.
- Reduce social isolation– children benefit from shared activities, teamwork and friendships.
- Promote physical activity and mental well-being among children.
For parents, the programme also eases financial pressures, offering childcare support during school holidays and giving peace of mind that children are safe, engaged, and supported.
At LSC, we’re proud to play a part in this national effort, working alongside schools, local councils and communities to deliver safe, active and engaging holiday programmes.
With this renewed funding, we can continue to ensure that children across Greater Manchester, Staffordshire, Birmingham, Merseyside and beyond have the best chance at achieving their potential.
